Spring into Spring season.
Tips for aligning with the magic of Spring, the season of birth, renewal and growth.
It’s almost Spring in the southern hemisphere and birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing… I’m so happy that the seasons are finally changing. It’s time to shake off Winter and welcome Spring!
There is something in the air
There is a definite surge of energy.
Our retina reacts to the increasing amount of sunlight and this adjusts melatonin, the hormone that affects our sleep cycles and mood changes.
People want to get out more, shed the layers and mingle.
5 Reasons to love Spring
1. Temperatures are moderate
It’s not too cold, not too hot. There’s no need to wear layers of clothes or to constantly look for shade.
2. There is more daylight.
More time to spend outside and yoga in nature is bliss. Also the sun will give us some Vitamin D.
3. Leaves grow back.
It’s amazing what the sun can do for plants. Trees release water back into the air and they pull carbon dioxide out, literally giving us more oxygen.
4. Flowers bloom.
…and we all know flowers make us happy ッ
5. Fruit and veg are in abundance
Spring is harvesting time and local is lekker. This is the best time to visit fresh produce markets.
Tips for aligning with Spring
1. Wake up with the sun
Instead of an alarm clock, imagine waking by the glow of the sun. When you wake up due to sunlight, your body will naturally be more alert and probably thank you for not being startled out of sleep by a ringing sound. More importantly, you get extra time in your day to do whatever makes your soul happy.
2. Say thank you to the universe.
The more we express our thanks, the more abundant our lives will be. The simple act of gratitude has a powerful response. And by universe I mean everything in it. As an example, I even thank my plants when I water them for looking so perky and giving oxygen to the room. Yeah, I’m that girl, haha.
3. Breathe deeply.
Pranayama is the practice of controlling the breath and it has many benefits. I am in the process of writing a full post on breath work and will post a link here soon. Some benefits include building energy in the body, increasing circulation which in turn boosts alertness and stamina, assisting digestion, clearing the lungs and nasal passage which is especially welcomed if you have seasonal allergies.
4. Try using a neti pot.
A neti pot is a type of nasal irrigation treatment. A saline solution is used with luke-warm water in the pot, to flush the nasal passages. It is poured into one side and flows out the other nostril, flushing irritants, toxins and allergens. It improves breathing and lessens sinus pressure. It takes some getting used to, but works wonders once you get the hang of it.
…Meditation is great for so many reasons, even a few minutes a day can greatly affect the state of mind and overall well-being. Even better, meditate outside, it’s now Spring after all!

6. Practice yoga daily.
Take your yoga outside or practice anywhere, anytime as long as you get on your mat. I look forward to the first day of Spring as I will be taking a rooftop yoga class to welcome in the season.
7. Spring clean.
Out with the old, in with the new.
Take inventory. Let go of what no longer serves you and make space for that which does.
Clean and declutter your home. Clear out all the items that’s just accumulated over time. Clothing you no longer wear, kitchen lids that have no container, expired medicine in the drawer, files, data, storage, anything that is just taking up space. With every item going in a box or bin, or repurposed or given to someone who needs it, you will feel lighter and lighter.
Clear the air. Burning sage (also known as smudging) is a widespread practice in feng-shui. Sage has anti-microbial properties. It is often used to purify yourself or your space of negative energy and it invites in newer, more positive energies.
8. Adjust your diet.
Eat more fresh vegetables and fruit, herbs, lighter meals and drink more water and tea.
Yoga postures to detoxify and energise
Ignite your fire and relieve feelings of sluggishness with these heating postures.
1. Sun Salutations.
Stimulate your circulation with a few rounds of Sun Salutations. Even just two rounds of Sun A and two rounds of Sun B will create a good amount of heat to start your Spring practice.
Detoxify your liver, spleen and kidney with twists, which helps with the removal of waste from the body.
3. Heart opening back-bends
Back-bends are stimulating poses that open up the chest and abdomen and helps to remove heaviness and congestion, improves respiration while also being known for their energising effects.
